紳士の冬の装いに欠かせないのが、ポロコートです。私が愛用しているグレーのポロコート（下写真）は、10年ほど前に手に入れたものです。
A polo coat is an essential part of a gentleman’s winter wardrobe. My favorite gray polo coat (pictured below) is one I bought about 10 years ago.
ポロコートとの出会い
Encounter with the polo coat
このコートの存在を知ったのは、あるファッション雑誌で見た、TIE YOUR TIEが仕立て屋のSeminaraにビスポーク品のサンプルとして作らせたコートの写真（下写真）でした。
I first learned about this coat when I saw a photo in a fashion magazine of a coat (pictured below) that TIE YOUR TIE had commissioned the tailor Seminara to make as a sample for a bespoke item.
このコートの写真を見たのは、2000年代初頭だったのですが、コートの説明にある「アルスター・コート」という記述で、このダブルブレストのコートの名前を知りました。今から20年前は、ちょうどユーロがスタートした時期で円が1ユーロ百円台と円が強かった時代だったので、価格も38万円でした。2026年の相場は、1ユーロ180円台ですからセミナーラでポロコートをビスポークすると、単純計算でも2000年時代の価格38万円を1.8倍すると、68万円です。これに人件費の上昇を考えると、100万円しても不思議はないですね。
I first saw a photo of this coat in the early 2000s, and learned the name of this double-breasted coat from the description of the coat, which said “Ulster coat.” 20 years ago, when the euro was just starting, the yen was strong, with the yen being around 100 yen per euro, so the price was 380,000 yen. The market price in 2026 is around 180 yen per euro, so if you make a bespoke polo coat at Seminara, it will cost 680,000 yen if you multiply the 2000 era price of 380,000 yen by 1.8. Considering this and the rise in labor costs, it’s no surprise that it costs 1 million yen.
ポロコートの起源はアルスターコート
The origin of the polo coat is the Ulster coat
アルスターという名前は、このコートがアイルランドのアルスター地方で生まれたことに由来します。当初のアルスターコートは、ケープ付きのロングコートだったのですが、1866年にJohn G. McGee and Coという会社が今のデザインに通じるダブルブレストのアルスターコートを考案して発売しました。下写真は、当時の広告です。現在のポロコートはバックベルトですが、当時のアルスターコートは、フルベルト付きだったのです。
The name Ulster comes from the fact that this coat originated in the Ulster region of Ireland. The original Ulster coat was a long coat with a cape, but in 1866 a company called John G. McGee and Co. came up with and released the double-breasted Ulster coat that is similar to the design we see today. The photo below is an advertisement from that time. Today’s polo coats have a back belt, but the Ulster coats of that time had a full belt.
アルスターコートは、ドネガルツィードなどのヘビーなツィード生地でつくられていたそうです。時代が経ち、アルスターコートと呼ばれていたコートを20世紀初頭に英国のポロ競技の選手たちが、試合の待ち時間の間に着用するコートとして利用するようになります（下写真）。下の写真を見ると、この時代には、ツィード生地から厚手のウール生地に変わっているように見えます。それとフルベルトはなくなっています。おそらく、スポーツ選手が利用しやすいようにバックベルトに変わったのでしょう。
The Ulster coat was originally made from heavy tweed fabrics such as Donegal tweed. Over time, coats known as Ulster coats began to be worn by British polo players in the early 20th century as coats to wear while waiting between matches (see photo below). Looking at the photo below, it appears that by this time the tweed fabric had changed to a thick woolen fabric. Also, the full belt has disappeared. It is likely that it was replaced with a back belt to make it easier for athletes to wear.

ポロ競技の選手たちが愛用するコートに魅力を感じた米国人が、ポロ競技を観戦するエレガントな英国貴族が連想できるネーミングとしてポロコートという名前（記号）を考えて、アメリカで売り出します。その初期のコートが下の写真です。メトロポリタン美術館が所蔵する資料によれば、1915年にブルックスブラザーズがポロコートとして発売し、初期の生地はクリーム色で、のちにグレーやキャメルヘアーの生地が追加されたとあります。1915年に発売されたクリーム生地のコートの写真は、初期のアルスターコートに近いデザインで、トレンチコートと同じフルベルト付きですが、2026年1月時点でのブルックスブラザーのオンラインショップにあるキャメルヘアー生地のポロコートはバックベルトに変わっています。
An American, attracted by the coats favored by polo players, coined the name “polo coat” (a symbol) to evoke the elegant British aristocracy who spectated polo matches, and marketed it in the United States. An early version of this coat is pictured below. According to documents held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooks Brothers released the coat in 1915, initially in cream fabric, with gray and camel hair fabrics added later. The photo of the cream coat released in 1915 is similar in design to the early Ulster coat and includes a full belt like the trench coat, but the camel hair polo coat available on the Brooks Brother online shop as of January 2026 has a back belt.

下写真は私が愛用するポロコートの内側ポケットに中にあるブランドタグですが、「Sartoria G. Seminara for Franco Minucci」とあるように、TIE YOUR TIE青山（現在閉店）の創業者フランコ・ミヌッチがフィレンツェのサルト「サルトリア・セミナーラ」に仕立てさせたデザインをベースにしてビスポークしたものです。
The photo below shows the brand tag on the inside pocket of my favorite polo coat. As it says, “Sartoria G. Seminara for Franco Minucci,” it was bespoke based on a design that Franco Minucci, the founder of TIE YOUR TIE Aoyama (now closed), had made by the Florentine tailor “Sartoria Seminara.”
通常、ビスポークしたアイテムには、サルトリアの名前とオーダー主の名前が入ったロゴがあるのですが（R.Ciardiビスポーク品のタグ写真参照）、当時のTIE YOUR TIE青山で仕立てるスーツやコートには、オーダー主の名前はなく、「Sartoria Seminara for Franco Minucci」というタグだけというのが特徴でもありました。
Typically, bespoke items have a logo featuring the name of the sartoria and the name of the person who placed the order (see photo of tag for R. Ciardi bespoke item), but at that time, the suits and coats made at TIE YOUR TIE Aoyama did not have the name of the person who placed the order, and only had a tag that read “Sartoria Seminara for Franco Minucci.”
通常、仕立て屋には、仕立て職人はいてもデザイナー（パタンナー）が別にいるケースはなくて、仕立て職人がその役割も担いますが、TIE YOUR TIEの場合は、デザイナーはフランコ・ミヌッチ、仕立て職人はセミナーラという分業になっていました。「Sartoria Seminara for Franco Minucci」というタグのついたスーツやコートが、フランコさんが男のクラシックな装いとしてデザインしたコートを仕立て屋のセミナーラが仕上げたことを示していて、クラシックなサルトリア服飾文化における興味深い「記号化」の例だと思います。
Typically, a tailor will have tailors, but not a separate designer (pattern maker); the tailors would also play that role. However, in the case of TIE YOUR TIE, the designer was Franco Minucci and the tailors were Seminara, so the division of labor was between them. A suit or coat bearing the tag “Sartoria Seminara for Franco Minucci” indicates that the coat designed by Franco as a classic men’s outfit was finished by the tailor Seminara, and I think it is an interesting example of “symbolism” in classic sartorial fashion culture.
フランコ・ミヌッチさんは、2000年代後半のことですが、「PITTIの羅針盤」と称された人でしたから、彼がデザインしたポロコートは、クラシックなポロコートの完成系だと私は思っています。
Franco Minucci was known as the “compass of PITTI” in the late 2000s, and I believe the polo coats he designed are the ultimate example of the classic polo coat.
彼がデザインしたポロコートをクラシックなポロコートと定義した時、そのデザインの主な特徴は、次の３つです。
If we define the polo coat he designed as a classic polo coat, there are three main features of its design:
- 首まで覆うことができるために、マフラーなしでも寒さを防げるダブルブレストのラペル
The double-breasted lapel covers the neck, so you can keep out the cold without a scarf. - スポーティーなバックベルト
Sporty back belt - 背中のセンタープリーツ
Center pleat on the back
元々のアルスターコートに存在した袖口の折り返しは、スポーティーさがなく、重々しいので不要になります。
The folded cuffs that were present on the original Ulster coat are no longer necessary, as they lack sportiness and look heavy.
もし、私のブログを読んで、ポロコートを入手したいと思われた方は、上の３つの条件を満たすポロコートを選ぶことをお勧めします。
If you’ve read my blog and are thinking of buying a polo coat, I recommend choosing one that meets the three conditions above.
ネットで調べてみると、いろいろありますが、下のコートなど価格的にも¥156,200でBEAMSの店頭でも確認できるので、初めてのポロコートとしてはよいかもしれません。ただ、センタープリーツがクラシックなものは、背中までありますが、このコートはヒップあたりからになっています。
If you search online, you’ll find a variety of options, but the coat below is priced at ¥156,200 and can be found in stores at BEAMS, so it might be a good choice for your first polo coat. However, while classic polo coats have center pleats that reach down to the back, this coat starts at the hips.
センタープリーツが短いのは、コストを抑えるためなのかもしれませんが、このBEAMSのコートは、税込で15万円台なので、売り手の誠実さが感じられます。でも、もし30万円を超えるもので、センタープリーツが短いなら、作り手の儲け意識が見え隠れするので、おすすめはできないですね。深いセンタープリーツと短めのセンタープリーツを比べると、歩いた時に後ろから見える雰囲気が全然違うと思います。
The short center pleats may be a cost-saving measure, but this BEAMS coat is priced at around 150,000 yen including tax, which shows the seller’s sincerity. However, if it were priced at over 300,000 yen and had a short center pleat, the maker’s profit-oriented nature would be obvious, and I wouldn’t recommend it. Comparing a deep center pleat with a short center pleat, I think the impression you get from behind when walking is completely different.
ちなみに、ポロコートの特徴の一つであるダブルブレストのラペルは、下の写真のようにラペルで首全体を覆うと、本当に暖かいです。
By the way, the double-breasted lapels, one of the features of a polo coat, are really warm when you cover your entire neck with the lapels as shown in the photo below.
スポーツとの深い関係のあるポロコートですから、別に紳士だけのものというよりも、若者がスポーティーに着こなす冬のアイテムでもあるといえます。ポロコートは、スーツの上に着るだけでなくて、タートルネックセーターとデニムなどに合わせたスタイリングにも合わせられます。
Polo coats have a deep connection with sports, so rather than being something only for gentlemen, they can also be seen as a winter item worn by young people in a sporty way. A polo coat can be worn not only over a suit, but also with a turtleneck sweater and denim.
スポーティーさを強調するには、キャメルヘアー生地が理想なので、次は下写真のようなキャメルヘアーのポロコートが欲しいなと思っています。
To emphasize the sporty look, camel hair fabric is ideal, so next time I would like a camel hair polo coat like the one in the photo below.
