Russian calfskin is a mythical leather produced in Imperial Russia in the 1700s. In 1786, a sailing ship sailed from Imperial Russia to Genoa, Italy, carrying Russian calfskin. Unfortunately, the ship sank in a storm in Plymouth Harbor off the coast of England. The Russian calfskin used in these shoes was found when the ship was salvaged in 1973.

ちなみに、John Lobb Londonに、本物のロシアンカーフの在庫があるかは不明です。2024年11月時点でレディメイドのロシアンカーフを使った女性用ブーツが紹介されています。2年ほど前には、ビスポーク靴で利用できる革にロシアンカーフが表記されていましたが、そのページは無くなっているので、もう在庫はないのかもしれません。ただ、注文できたとしても、おそらく100万円を超える価格になると思うので、普通の人には手が届きません。

実は、このロシアンカーフを復刻したブランドがあります。それは、エルメスです。エルメスが復刻させたのはヴォリンカレザーと呼ばれるもの。この革は、英国のベイカー社（正式名はJ. & F.J. Baker & Co Ltd.）というタンナーとエルメスが共同開発したものです。下の写真は、ヴォリンカレザーを使ったエルメスのオータクロアです。
In fact, there is a brand that has reproduced Russian calf leather. It is Hermes. The leather that Hermes reproduced is called Volinka leather. This leather was jointly developed by Hermes and a British tanner called Baker (officially known as J. & F.J. Baker & Co Ltd.).
