「スーツはこうあるべき」「こんなスーツスタイルはダメ」などとファッション業界の方たちのお話をYouTubeなどで見かけることが多いです。でも、そんなお話を聞いていても、ちょっと違うなと思うことがあったりします。そこで、わたし自身が、スーツなどの装いのアイテムに散財してきて感じたことや、私の憧れの紳士であるFranco Minucciさんの意見をここで少し紹介してみようと思います。
I often see people in the fashion industry on YouTube saying things like, “A suit should be like this” or “This suit style is no good.” However, even when I hear such things, there are times when I feel like it’s not quite right. So, I’d like to share my own thoughts after spending a lot of money on suits and other clothing items, as well as the opinions of Franco Minucci, a gentleman I admire.

この文章は、2000年代初頭のGQ Japanのインタビュー記事で、伝説のメンズショップ「TIE YOUR TIE」創業者のFranco Minucciさんがお話しされたことで、全文は以下です。
This passage was spoken by Franco Minucci, founder of the legendary men’s shop “TIE YOUR TIE,” in an interview with GQ Japan in the early 2000s. The full text is below.
Q「ステッチが均一でないなど、スーツや靴のディテールにこだわりすぎるのをどう思いますか？」 "What do you think about being too particular about details on suits and shoes, like uneven stitching?" Franco「欠点を受け入れて愛することを学んでください。イタリアでは均一ではないステッチや、歪んだり曲がったりしたポケットを"ベル・ディフェット（美しい欠陥）"と呼びます。職人の作るものには、多少の傷や欠陥がつきものです。それらを上手に身に着けることを覚えてください。」 "Learn to accept and love imperfections. In Italy, we call uneven stitching or crooked or curved pockets 'bel diffetto' (beautiful imperfections). Anything made by a craftsman will have some imperfections. Learn to wear them well."
この記事を最初に読んだときには、正直、意味がよくわかりませんでした。でも、実際にFrancoさんが創業したTIE YOUR TIEでKITONのカシミアスーツ（下の写真）を購入して着用してみて、彼が言っていることがわかりました。
To be honest, when I first read this article, I didn’t really understand what he meant. But after actually buying and wearing a KITON cashmere suit (pictured below) at TIE YOUR TIE, the brand founded by Franco, I began to understand what he was talking about.
このKITONのスーツは、サマーカシミア100％の生地で仕立てられていて、当時、定価80万円ほどのものです。でも、生地が繊細すぎることも相まってスーツのラペルが少し波打っていたり、ジャケットはボタンを止めないと、縦皺が入ったりします。
This KITON suit is made from 100% summer cashmere and had a list price of around 800,000 yen at the time. However, because the fabric is so delicate, the lapels of the suit are slightly wavy and the jacket will develop vertical wrinkles if not buttoned up.
これがFrancoさんがいう「職人の手仕事によるスーツの美しい欠陥」なのです。わたしは、この独特の雰囲気が大好きです。
These are what Franco calls “beautiful imperfections in a suit made by hand by an artisan.” I love this unique atmosphere.
日本にも素晴らしいスーツを作るファクトリーがあり、BEAMSやストラスブルゴなどのセレクトショップで販売しているオリジナルスーツは、それらのファクトリーで仕上げられたものですが、こういうテイストというか味のあるスーツはありません。というより、むしろ、仕上げが完璧なので、このKITONのスーツのようにはなりません。
Japan also has factories that make wonderful suits, and the original suits sold in select shops like BEAMS and Strasburgo are finished in these factories, but none of them have this kind of taste or character. Or rather, because the finish is so perfect, they don’t look like this KITON suit.
私の個人的意見ですが、それはパーフェクトさを求める日本人独特の嗜好性に合わせているのではないかな、と思っています。「80万円もするようなスーツなのに、ラペルが波打つなど、こんな欠陥があるのはありえない」というお客さんが大半だからです。
This is just my personal opinion, but I think this is to suit the unique Japanese taste for perfection. This is because the majority of customers think, “It’s unthinkable that a suit that costs 800,000 yen would have defects like wavy lapels.”
私が愛用するスーツでいえば、Francoさんが来日した2008年に彼に採寸してもらってビスポークで仕立てたSartoria Seminaraにも同様の「美しい欠陥」があります。でも、自然な皺だったりするんですね。
One of my favorite suits, the Sartoria Seminara, which I had bespoke tailored after Franco took my measurements when he visited Japan in 2008, also has similar “beautiful imperfections.” But they are natural wrinkles.
私の個人的意見としては、こういう欠点のあるスーツを自然に着こなせるようになれば、人が素敵だなと思ってくれるのかなと思います。私がその域に達しているかはもちろん、わかりませんが。
My personal opinion is that if I can learn to wear suits with these imperfections naturally, people will think they look great. Of course, I don’t know if I’ve reached that level yet.

Q「エレガントなスーツスタイルとは？それに最も大切なことは」 "What is an elegant suit style? And what is the most important thing?" Franco「ハーモニーとバランス、美しい肉体（姿勢）、自信に満ちた着こなしのすべてが揃ったものです。大切なことは、スーツ、シャツ、タイ、靴のハーモニーです。カッチリ固まらずに、少し肩の力を抜いた遊びのあるエレガンスが、イタリア男性のスタイルです。」 "Harmony and balance, good posture, and confident dressing are all part of the look. The key is the harmony between the suit, shirt, tie, and shoes. The Italian man's style is not rigid, but rather a relaxed, playful elegance." Q「スーツスタイルにおけるサイズ、色、価格バランスの重要性は？」 "What is the importance of size, color, and price balance when it comes to suit styles?" Franco「自分のサイズを知るためには、良い職人（サルトリア）に出会うことが重要です。時と場所、季節、自分の肌や髪の色など個性に合った色を知ることです。価格バランスは年齢や職業、収入によって異なりますが、これも全体のハーモニーが必要です。低価格のものでも、お洒落心があれば、必ず素敵に見えるはずです。例えば、7万円のスーツに30万円の靴を合わせるのは、フィアットパンダにフェラーリのエンジンを無理やり搭載したような感じで、バランスが良くありません。」 "To find your size, it's important to find a good tailor. It's also important to know the colors that suit your personality, including the time, place, season, and your skin and hair color. Price balance will vary depending on age, occupation, and income, but again, overall harmony is essential. Even low-priced items will look great if you have a sense of fashion. For example, matching a 70,000 yen suit with 300,000 yen shoes is like forcing a Ferrari engine into a Fiat Panda; it's not balanced."
私は今、64歳になったので、スーツ、タイ、シャツ、靴のハーモニーというFrancoさんの言葉通りのアイテムを持っています。
Now that I’m 64, I have exactly what Franco described as the harmony of a suit, tie, shirt, and shoes.
おそらく、彼は語ってはいないですが、スーツスタイルのトータルなハーモニーとバランスには時計やカバンも含まれるのでしょう。今日の装いに使ったスーツはTIE YOUR TIEがKITONに特注してデザインしたもの、シャツはカルロリーバの生地で仕立てたTIE YOUR TIEのシャツ、タイはTIE YOUR TIEのニットタイ、靴も靴職人の深谷秀隆さんがデザインしたTIE YOUR TIEのスウェードの既製靴、時計はカルティエの手巻きのタンクルイ、コートはヴィンテージのバーバリーコートです。
Although he probably didn’t say it specifically, the total harmony and balance of a suit style probably includes watch and bag. The suit I wore today was custom-designed by TIE YOUR TIE for KITON; the shirt is a TIE YOUR TIE shirt made from Carlo Riva fabric; the tie is a TIE YOUR TIE knit tie; the shoes are TIE YOUR TIE suede ready-to-wear shoes designed by shoemaker Hidetaka Fukaya; the watch is a Cartier Tank Louis hand-wound watch; and the coat is a vintage Burberry coat.
でも、このスーツや靴、時計は、子供たちが成人して財布に余裕ができたときに買ったもの。60歳を超えて、ようやく、Francoさんのいうトータルハーモニーとバランスが生まれたといえます。これを30代で全てを揃えられる人はよほど裕福な家に生まれた方以外にはいないでしょう。
However, these suit, shoes, and watch were all purchased when my children became adults and I had more money. It’s only now, after turning 60, that I’ve finally achieved the total harmony and balance Franco spoke of. It’s unlikely anyone could have all of these in their 30s, except for those born into extremely wealthy families.
20代の頃は、スーツはエンポリオアルマーニだけど、アルマーニにふさわしい靴を買う余裕がなくて、バランスが悪かったので、妻から「もっといい靴を買わないとダメよ」と言われたものです。そんな装いのバランスを大切にすること、男より女性の方がわかっているのかもしれませんね。
When I was in my 20s, I wore Emporio Armani suits, but I couldn’t afford the right shoes, so my outfit looked unbalanced, and my wife would tell me, “You need to buy better shoes.” It seems women understand better than men that it’s important to value balance in an outfit like this.
でも、今はKITONやATTOLINIなどのハイエンドスーツ、JOHN LOBBなどの高級靴も含めて、誰かが愛用したものや、ショップが売り切れずに残ったアイテムが古着市場に流れる時代になりました。これらのアイテムのうちで状態のいいものを探せば、高円寺のサファリやコメ兵などでリーズナブルに見つけられるから、若い方達には、ハーモニーとバランスの適切なスーツスタイルを作れると思います。
However, we are now in an age where items that someone has loved or that are left over from shops that haven’t sold out, including high-end suits from brands like KITON and ATTOLINI, and luxury shoes from brands like JOHN LOBB, are finding their way onto the second-hand clothing market. If you can find some of these items in good condition, you can find them at reasonable prices at places like Koenji Safari or Komehyo, so I think even young people can create a harmonious and balanced suit style using the best items at an affordable price.
古着に抵抗のある人もいるでしょうが、欧州では、父親や祖父が仕立てたビスポークスーツを仕立て直す文化があります。残念ながら、日本ではそういう文化が一般的ではないけれど、知らない誰かからバトンタッチしてもらって、最高品質のスーツを自分のものにすることもできます。
Some people may be averse to secondhand clothing, but in Europe there is a culture of having bespoke suits made by one’s father or grandfather re-tailored. Unfortunately, this culture is not common in Japan, but you can still have a top-quality suit handed down to you by someone you don’t know.
気に入った中古のスーツが大きすぎたりしても、自分のサイズにフィットさせるように、心斎橋リフォームなどのお直し専門店にそのスーツを持ち込めばよいのです。そのようにして、スーツスタイルのハーモニーとバランスをつくるのもよいのではと、わたしは思います。
If a second-hand suit you like is too big, you can simply take it to a specialist alteration shop like Shinsaibashi Reform and have it re-fitted to fit you. I think this is a good way to create harmony and balance in your suit style.
最後に、Francoさんがお話しされた中で「自分のサイズを知るには、良い職人に出会うことが重要」というところは、若い方達からすると、なかなか難しいかもしれません。
Finally, Franco said that “meeting a good craftsman is important to find out your size,” which may be difficult for younger people.
というのは、まず、スーツをビスポークをすること自体が高額なので難しいのはもちろんですが、メンズショップの店員さんが若い方達が多くて、経験のある店員さんが少ない印象があるからです。ただ、BEAMSさんは、店舗によってはベテランの店員さんが頑張っておられるので、私は好印象を持っています。YouTubeによく出演されているBEAMSの伊藤昌輝さんは、経験豊富でユニークな方と思います。わたしも機会があればお会いしたいなとも思っています。
First of all, having a suit bespoke is difficult because it is expensive, but I also get the impression that many of the staff at men’s shops are young and not many with experience. However, I have a good impression of BEAMS, as some stores have veteran staff working hard. I think Masateru Ito of BEAMS, who often appears on YouTube, is an experienced and unique person. I would like to meet him if I have the opportunity.
